If you hit the "remember me" button when you log in, it will keep you logged on no matter how long you are busy writing a post. Your way works too, though.

I've found a trick to making long posts.

I type my post in another program; Word, Text Editor, Notepad, etc. and then open the forum to copy and paste it. That way I don't have to re-log on when I hit the button to post.
