Standing upon the pedestal of Truth

Since this subsection* of the Forum is for comments as well as suggestions, I will take this opportunity to stand upon the pedestal of Truth and declaim to all and sundry that this is an amazingly well-run message board and, further, that Jinn is the best board administrator with whom I have ever dealt.

Without going into great detail (which would only bore you and make me look really, really incompetent), I will say that Jinn is an administrator of infinite patience, great knowledge, infinite patience, a genuine desire to help those less technologically competent than -- oh say -- a rock, infinite patience and, apparently, does not know the meaning of the words 'frustration', 'procrastination' or 'sleep'.

Other boards I have joined either ran themselves with no visible admin, or had an admin whose sole function seemed to be to browbeat members into voting for him/her in whatever poll was being taken that week. To spend (a lot of) time dealing with someone who genuinely wants to make even his non-paying customers happy -- well -- I've smiled a lot this past week.

I'm glad to see the support for Jinn and hope that it continues, but it has come to my attention that I neglected to clearly establish the theme for this thread.

As some of you are aware, I have obnoxiously attempted to drag two or three threads that have gotten sidetracked back onto their original themes and, given the opportunity, I'll probably do so again (and y'all can feel free to ignore those attempts). To try to make up for that, I intended to set up the Pillar of Truth as an "open" thread, where there would be no set topic, just a place for people to gather in the Forum and declaim the Truth. Unfortunately, I neglected to SAY that...

Oh, well. You live and you learn. The Pillar of Truth is not my own invention, but a concept that I have appropriated (read "stolen") from the comic strip B.C. At the time I came up with the idea, I had not seen it in use for several years. Of course, it appeared in today's paper. *sigh*

At any rate, compliments to Jinn (or anyone else) are always welcome here, but members who simply need a soapbox on which to stand for a moment may find the Pillar of Truth to be equally convenient.

My hope was that this would be a place for stating opinions (preferably well thought out and carefully considered opinions, unlike the two reviews I wrote last night, for which I ought to apologize *sigh*) or facts, not for asking questions or making suggestions for improvements/modifications.

No, that was not a shot, Moggy. I just meant that there are other sub-Forums and/or threads that are already set up for the asking and answering of questions. Of course, none of this constitutes an actual EXAMPLE, just an explanation. Example follows:

I was surprised by a question I found starting another thread elsewhere in the Forum. The question assumed that most or all of the reader's were living a BDSM lifestyle (whether full- or part-time). I had assumed that most of the people on this site were like me, just readers or casual visitors with only a peripheral connection to the lifestyle. Dabblers, if you will. For me BDSM is a pleasant fantasy, occaisionally indulged in, not a lifestyle. Of course, I'm always surprised when my assumptions wither in the bright light of day.

Well, that's about the best job I can do as far as clarifying my intent as a thread-starter. If it's still too confusing, ignore it as post as you will! Or, start your own thread <smiles>. It's easy. And no hassle at all.

Confusion rears, or reigns about certain written expressions. Is it a "pedestal of truth", or a "pillar" of the same? As for "schemeloquence" well, what can one really say?

I have good news for BDSM_Tourguide! Next Monday or Tuesday I'll be going off-line for three months or more.

Last Tuesday when I tried to fire up my eMac, there was a pop!ping sound (never a good sign) and my screen flashed polychromaticly, then went dead. I just got it back today after a week in the shop (under warranty) but, in the meantime, something happened.

I became productive.

I got more hours of sleep, and higher quality sleep.
I got some reading done that had been hanging over my head for months.
I cleaned one-fifth of my attic and got six boxes of books ready to go to the library sale. (Tonight I hope to get another fifth finished -- No! Not that kind of fifth, Bruce!)
I spent close to four hours listening to Gloria Estefan. (If there's a better definition of heaven, I don't know about it.)
I copied a videotape I'd been meaning to copy for four months.
I got my modern microarmor Marines sorted, assembled and painted (don't ask!).

In short, I got my life back.

I've been sort of low-grade depressed for a long time and haven't been able to put my finger on just what was wrong. What was wrong turned out to be an internet addiction.
I didn't go through withdrawl -- it was more like a great weight was lifted from me and I was able to see the world for the first time since last October. So, what I've decided to do (after extending my warranty!) is to let my RoadRunner service expire on the 16th, then pack my computer up until after my seasonal job ends in early October. Then I'll unpack it and plug back in for the winter (until next April). My intention is to only have it out of the box for six months or so out of every year, during my 'retired' months.
I'll miss some of you (and some of you more than others), but this sabbatical is really neccessary for my mental health and well-being. And besides, I think you've all gotten pretty tired of me, so you can enjoy the break, too. (Is that the sound of celebration from Alberta?)

For me, I have found that I spend less and less time online. I have been ill for many years and the internet has defiently provided me with more self confidence, and a great deal of positive affirmations that I really needed to be able to rejoin the world outside of my home.

I have met many friends not to mention my Owner online and am now enjoying their company in real time.

Andddddddddd (insert drum roll here) I have even ventured so far as to get a part time job, to see if my health can sustain me returning to work in my field, or returning to work at all.

Soooo while I can appreciate the desier to get your life back, for me the connection is a saving grace so to speak.

I have to go face some potentially suicidal Chicago Cubs' fans this morning -- the Cubbies were eliminated from the playoffs last night, continuing their near-century of frustration.

They are said to be laboring under a curse that has prevented them from winning the World Series. It appeared, after taking a 3 games to 1 lead over the Florida Marlins in a best-of-seven series, that the curse might have finally run its course.

I had not followed the Cubs closely this season, but after that fourth game, I followed the rest of the series, expecting, at first, to see their historic breakthrough.

But as soon I saw that they had a player named O'Leary on their roster, I knew that they had been guilty of hubris -- of challenging the gods of fate with prideful arrogance.

It was Mrs O'Leary's cow, you see, who started the great Chicago fire.
